The Richmond Improvement Association (RIA) was formed to help improve the quality of life in Richmond, California through community organizing projects designed to build a more peaceful and prosperous community.
Under the leadership of Reverend Andre Shumake, the coalition of Richmond churches, partnering nonprofit organizations and concerned citizens has helped to address the group's following six core issue areas:
Gentrification/Displacement
- Single Family Ownership
- Mixed-Use/Income Development
- Transitional Housing for Mothers and Children
- Transitional Housing for Parolees
- Affordable Rental Units
Employment & Training
- Community Career Resource Center
- Business development to create job opportunities
- Pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs
- Job Retention Services
Transportation
- Support the re-authorization of the Federal Transportation Act for the 21st Century
- Support the re-authorization of Measure C locally
- Advocate for reliable, safe and affordable public transportation
- Advocate for the continuation of free or reduced bus passes for students
Education
- Academic Centers for Excellence to be located in ten selected congregations
- Parental mentoring to create an environment conducive to learning at home
- Prepare students for SAT tests, and the upcoming high school exit examination
- Continued Adult Education/GED preparation
Violence
- Development and implementation of a federally funded Weed and Seed program (DOJ)
- Stop The Gun Violence Campaign
- Violence prevention public service announcements
- Re-entry program for youths and adults
Faith Based Mentoring
- Richmond Youth Academy (North Richmond Outreach Ministry)
- Mentoring programs for boys and girls
- Community-based afterschool tutorial programs
